New High Resolution Satellite Views

Sunday, April 6th, 2008 by Thomas

A few days ago Google has again updated the Satellite views of the maps we are using here at MapSkip. The full list of updated or improved locations is too long to publish here since there are hundreds of cities from all over the world on the list, but some of the highlights are:

  • High Resolution:
    • Mt. Fuji in Japan
    • Bourdeaux in France
    • Three Gorges Dam in China
  • 2.5m  Resolution:
    • northern Chile
    • South Africa
    • Namibia
    • Zimbabwe
    • North Korea

There also have been significant updates to many of the large cities in China and several North American cities like Vancouver, Dallas, Chicago and New York City.

Monday, March 10th, 2008 by Thomas

Google has recently performed their first update this year of the satellite views for many areas of the planet. Most of South Africa and many cities of Spain have received high resolution images, as well as Sydney and Auckland.

Story Terrain

Saturday, December 8th, 2007 by Thomas

map_types.jpgGoogle has added a new feature to their maps and we are happy to offer this to our users of MapSkip: Terrain Maps!

When you are on the map you will see a new button at the very right in the map tools, and a simple click will reveal Google’s beautiful new terrain maps for the area you are looking at.

These maps should be especially interesting if you want to write about a recent hiking trip or if you want to share mountain stories with the MapSkip community.

Japan Map Details

Thursday, November 15th, 2007 by Thomas

While writing some stories about Japan, I noticed how much Google’s maps for Japan have improved since the last time I looked. While the Satellite data is still not complete at a high resolution for most of Asia, the maps for Japan are now amazing in their detail.

See for instance this story about Okadya in Tokyo by digitaldiva - zoom in all the way and look around a bit to see how dense the details in this map are!
